Model United Nations as an activity is, above all, intended to empower and educate participants about the most significant concerns in global politics and work done by international organizations such as the United Nations to address them. Of course, awards are also an important component of the Model UN experience as a way to recognize individual delegations that display superior skills in their preparation and presentation of their assigned Member State.
These delegations are nominated by members of the Executive Staff and Dais (i.e. Director and Assistant Director(s)) for several award types: (a) Best Overall Delegation(s), (b) Distinguished Delegation(s), (c) Honorable Delegation(s), (d) Most Diplomatic Delegation(s), and (e) Best Speaker. The number of awards for each committee and conference will vary and be determined by the number of overall delegations in attendance. Note also that some committees (i.e. crisis) have awards specific to that committee. Not all delegations will be recognized for awards, but all delegates should take pride in their collective efforts throughout the conference.
The following criteria are used to determine the merit of each delegation's performance:
Caucusing: Does the delegation make a concerted effort to collaborate with other delegations during informal debate? Do they actively work to incorporate the perspectives of other nations into their collective efforts?
Diplomacy: Does the delegation work to find cohesion and compromise among other delegations? Is the delegation respectful, educated, and professional in their interactions with other delegations?
Participation: Does the delegation effectively communicate their Member State's policies and beliefs succinctly and efficiently? Does the delegation use persuasion to engage other delegations while maintaining a diplomatic approach?
Preparation: Does the delegation accurately represent their Member State's policies and beliefs in the context of the topic? Do they have a solid comprehension of the committee topic(s) and the committee's legal and institutional purview?
Resolution Writing: Does the delegation contribute substantive ideas and/or language used in the production of working papers and draft resolutions? Does the delegation work effectively with other delegations to generate working papers that are relevant to the committee's topic and scope?
Winning Delegation(s) will be recognized at the Closing Ceremonies and provided with a an Award Certificate as recognition for their efforts during the conference.
